Pre-Purchase Exams: Why Every Horse Purchase Deserves a Closer Look

Buying or selling a horse is a significant decision, both emotionally and financially. Whether you are searching for your next high-level competition partner or a weekend trail riding companion, understanding the horse’s health before a sale is finalized is an important part of the process.

A pre-purchase examination (PPE) provides an opportunity for a vet to evaluate a horse’s current health and soundness, identify findings that may be relevant to the horse’s intended use, and help both parties approach the transaction with greater transparency.

At BEVS, we believe a PPE is about more than identifying potential concerns. It’s about providing valuable information, encouraging open communication, and helping buyers and sellers alike make informed decisions.

What is a PPE?

A pre-purchase examination is a veterinary evaluation usually performed at the request of a prospective buyer before purchasing a horse. The examination is tailored to the individual horse and the buyer’s intended use, whether that involves competing, breeding, recreational riding, or beyond.

While no examination can guarantee a horse’s future health or soundness, a PPE provides a snapshot of the horse’s condition at the time of evaluation.

The examination typically includes several components:

  • Medical history: Review of available medical records, previous injuries, treatments, medications, and relevant health concerns.

  • Physical examination: Evaluation of the horse’s overall health, including the eyes, heart, lungs, and other body systems.

  • Lameness and neurologic evaluation: Observation of the horse at rest and in motion, including assessment at the walk, trot, and canter. Other tests like circling, backing up, or stepping over obstacles may be warranted.

  • Flexion tests: Evaluating a horse’s response to stress placed on specific joints and soft tissue structures.

  • Hoof, limb, and body scoring evaluation: Assessment of the conformation of the feet, legs, and musculoskeletal system.

  • Additional diagnostics: Depending on the horse and intended use, the veterinarian may recommend radiographs, ultrasound, bloodwork, or other testing.

A PPE is not a simple pass-or-fail test. It’s an opportunity to gather information and better understand the needs of the horse being considered.

How does a PPE Benefit the Seller?

Although pre-purchase examinations are generally requested by buyers, sellers can benefit from them as well.

A PPE encourages transparency and provides an opportunity to establish a clearer understanding of the horse’s health at the time of sale.

Benefits for sellers include:

  • Building buyer confidence: An independent veterinary evaluation can help prospective buyers feel more comfortable moving forward.

  • Reducing misunderstandings: Documenting findings before the sale may help prevent disagreements about pre-existing conditions discovered after the horse changes ownership.

  • Supporting transparency: Sharing relevant medical history and examination findings encourages an open, informed transaction.

  • Helping facilitate the sale: When buyers have a better understanding of the horse’s condition, they can make decisions based on information rather than uncertainty.

A PPE is not a guarantee against future disputes or a certification that a horse is free of all abnormalities. However, it can help establish a clearer picture of the horse’s needs for maintenance or athletic potential at the time of purchase.

How does a PPE Benefit the Buyer?

For buyers, a pre-purchase examination is an important opportunity to understand what they are investing in before making a financial and emotional commitment.

Even a horse that appears healthy and performs well during a trial may have underlying conditions that are not immediately apparent.

A PPE can help buyers:

  • Identify potential health concerns: The examination may reveal abnormalities, previous injuries, or soundness issues that warrant further investigation.

  • Understand future management needs: Certain findings may require monitoring, additional veterinary care, or changes in workload.

  • Make a more informed financial decision: Understanding potential veterinary expenses or management considerations can help buyers plan accordingly.

  • Determine suitability for intended use: A finding may have different implications for a high-performance athlete than for a horse intended for light recreational riding.

  • Ask informed questions: The examination provides an opportunity to discuss findings, request additional diagnostics, and better understand potential risks before completing the purchase.

Remember, not every abnormality means a horse is unsuitable. Your veterinarian can help explain the significance of individual findings and how they may relate to your goals.

Is a Pre-Purchase Exam Worth the Investment?

Buying a horse is a substantial financial commitment, not to mention ongoing costs for boarding, feed, training, or shoeing. The cost of a pre-purchase exam is an investment in information. While a PPE can’t predict every future injury or illness, it can identify concerns that could influence a purchase decision, require additional testing, or affect the horse’s long-term management or suitability.

The value of knowing about a potential issue prior to purchasing often outweighs discovering an issue after the horse has come home. That knowledge can help you plan, ask informed questions, discuss options with your veterinarian, and consider whether this horse is the right fit for your needs. A PPE also benefits everyone involved by encouraging communication between the buyer, seller, and vet.
